Weathertight is specified for exposed openings above the freeboard deck, where the door has to resist driving rain, wind, spray and light wave pressure. Watertight is specified where the door forms part of the vessel’s subdivision and has to hold static head from either side in a flooding event, typically below the freeboard deck. If you tell us the deck and the compartments either side, we will specify it with you.
No. We supply A-class rated assemblies from manufacturers who hold current type approval, and we pass their certificate through with the unit. An A-rating belongs to a tested assembly rather than to a material or a shop, so the certificate has to come from whoever tested that exact configuration. We fabricate the aluminium and stainless doors ourselves and supply the rated assemblies alongside them as one package.
An A60 assembly holds fire integrity and limits temperature rise on the unexposed face for sixty minutes under the standard fire test. It is normally required between machinery spaces and accommodation or service spaces. A0, A15 and A30 apply to lower-risk boundaries. Which one you need is set by the boundary on your fire control plan, not by preference — send us the plan and we will match it.
Dogs create the compression that makes the seal work, so the number rises with the tightness rating — a spray-tight door may need two, a weathertight door six, a watertight door twelve. Quick-acting dogging closes all points in a single motion, which matters where a door has to be secured fast or frequently.
Opening height and width, corner radius, sill height, bulkhead or frame thickness, swing direction, and the required tightness rating. For a replacement, photographs of the existing frame and dogging in place are worth more than a written description. DWG, PDF, JPG and PNG all upload fine.
Fabricated doors typically ship in 9 to 12 weeks from drawing approval. Supplied A-class assemblies run to the partner manufacturer’s schedule, which we confirm at quote rather than after the order.
